This PSD file contains the following steps taken to develop an illustration from a rough oil painting to a refined digital illustration:

  • Snapshots of the traditional paint-sketch process—from pencil sketch to value block-in, etc.
  • Refining the piece through progressive layers of digital painting—with strategic use of blending modes
  • Using adjustment layers to explore different color schemes.
  • Adding photo textures in order to create magical particle effects and interesting textures.
  • Mocking up text copy as if using the illustration as a book cover image.
