"Tendit in Ardua Virtu" – A Self–Portrait

Paper toned with pastel, sepia chalk pencil, graphite pencil, white prismacolor pencil, digital touch-ups.

I decided to take this portrait more seriously than the last. Notably, working from a mirror rather than a photo makes a huge difference in capturing likeness and tone. I think the subtle movements between glances informed my drawing decisions, whereas no such movements are available in a photo.

It's rewarding to see that my studies of facial anatomy are making the process faster and easier. This piece took about 3 hours—not that it's about time, I hate when artists brag about speed and would have no issue with it taking 30 hours. Still...it's nice to see fruit sooner sometimes.

That's it for now. Thanks for following along!
